Rufino Tamayo

Rufino Tamayo, one of the most recognized Mexican painters worldwide, was the one who throughout the 20th century was able to combine his Mexican heritage and pre-Hispanic art with the international avant-garde, in pieces marked by color, perspective, harmony and texture.

WHO IS RUFINO TAMAYO?

Born on August 26, 1899 in Oaxaca, Tamayo painted more than 1,300 oil paintings, including 20 portraits of his wife Olga, with whom he was married for 57 years; He made 465 graphic works, such as lithographs and mixographs, 350 drawings, 20 murals, as well as a stained glass window.

His murals can be found in the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the National Museum of Anthropology and the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico, as well as in the Dallas Museum of Cinema Arts, the Library of the University of Puerto Rico and at the headquarters of the UNESCO, in Paris, while his work is exhibited in such emblematic venues as the Museums of Modern Art in Mexico and New York, the Guggenheim and the Philips Collection, in Washington.



“I am very Mexican, there is no remedy. Where I have been, what feeds me is Mexico," he said to express his evident commitment to his country, which is notorious in the spirit of his art."
