Member of an old family of Polish nobility and niece of the legendary poet Pita Amor, Elena Poniatowska was born in France, arrived in Mexico during World War II (she was ten years old) and obtained citizenship many years later, in 1969. After studying in his adopted country and in the United States, in 1953 he began his career as a journalist, a profession he always practiced and served as the starting point for several of his testimonial works.
